I joined Kaiser Permanente's National Provider Data Management (NPDM) team in 2022 as a Senior Business Consultant. The NPDM team served as the central hub for provider data across Kaiser Permanente's national network, supporting everything from regulatory compliance to member-facing tools and executive decision-making. Over two years, I managed multiple initiatives across the department—leading the implementation of Atlassian's Jira and Confluence (including requirements gathering and executive buy-in), designing documentation templates and project management processes, collaborating with data analysts on internal and regulatory analyses, and helping the print directory team develop a new change request workflow that reduced time-to-action by 25%. Throughout all this work, I also championed increased alignment of department output with KP's brand standards—ensuring consistency and professionalism across member-facing materials and internal tools.
Of all the work I managed, two projects stand out as particularly impactful: a complete redesign of Kaiser Permanente's printed provider directories and a comprehensive UI/UX overhaul of the Optimal Provider Finder application—a critical tool used by KP leadership to assess network coverage and regulatory compliance. Both projects addressed fundamental usability and compliance challenges while delivering measurable improvements in efficiency, accuracy, and decision-making capability.

Print Directory Proof of Concept
This PDF is a proof-of-concept from my automated publishing workflow, demonstrating the icons I developed with the branding and Medicare teams—some adapted from the KP style guide, others newly created—to convey key provider information more efficiently while reducing page count.

Better Printed Provider Directories
US law requires all health-plans to make printed directories of network providers available to members upon request. This regulatory mandate created persistent challenges: the data became obsolete almost immediately after printing, production costs were substantial, and the directories were generated by systems separate from the website—creating alignment and accuracy issues between digital and print information.
I completely redesigned the printed provider directories and developed an XML-based, data-driven publishing system leveraging Adobe InDesign and data pulled directly from the KP website. The new design significantly reduced page count, improved accessibility, better adhered to Medicare and Medicaid standards, and fully aligned with KP's brand guidelines. While my automated publishing system wasn't implemented due to organizational constraints, the new design was adopted and has saved Kaiser Permanente tens of thousands of dollars in paper costs alone. More importantly, regulatory adherence improved by over 20%, significantly reducing KP's risk of fines while ensuring members received more accurate, usable information about their provider network.
Optimizing the Optimal Provider Finder
The Optimal Provider Finder (OPF) tool was designed and built by the NPDM team to provide Kaiser Permanente leadership with critical data on provider network coverage and regulatory compliance. Regulatory requirements for medical networks vary significantly by state, so the initial version focused on a single state with plans to expand nationwide. The data OPF generated was invaluable for understanding network gaps and determining how to meet both regulatory requirements and business goals—but the user experience made accessing that value unnecessarily difficult.
The interface was cumbersome, results were often unclear, and deriving meaningful conclusions required significant additional work. Executives couldn't use the tool independently—they had to request reports from the NPDM team, creating bottlenecks and delays in critical decision-making. I was tasked with redesigning the UI/UX to make the application easier to use and the results clearer and more actionable.
My redesign transformed how leadership interacted with OPF. The new interface enabled executives to use the tool themselves without requiring intermediary reports, and changes to data presentation increased the visibility and actionability of information by over 80%. The improvements made it faster and easier for leadership to understand network coverage gaps and make critical decisions about provider recruitment and network development—ultimately leading to better access to care for Kaiser Permanente's members.

Driving Efficiency, Compliance, and Savings
Across both projects, my work's impact extended beyond immediate deliverables. The print directory redesign demonstrated how thoughtful design and data integration could transform a compliance obligation into a cost-effective, brand-aligned member resource while dramatically reducing regulatory risk. The OPF redesign proved that improving user experience isn't just about aesthetics—it's about enabling faster, more confident decision-making on issues that directly affect patient care and organizational compliance.
Together, these projects saved Kaiser Permanente significant resources, reduced regulatory exposure, and empowered leadership to make better-informed decisions about provider networks serving millions of members nationwide. They exemplified how strategic design thinking and user-centered problem-solving can deliver measurable business value even within highly regulated, complex healthcare environments.
